Our Article of the Month

What do you really, REALLY want?

Love ‘em or hate ‘em The Spice Girls said, “So, tell me what you want, what you REALLY, really want?” And it’s a good question. What do YOU truly want, what gets YOU excited, what are your SECRET dreams?

These questions sound easy until you actually try to answer them. And realize that it’s very easy to dismiss our deepest held dreams and ideas as silly, not meaningful enough – or just not what we’re supposed  to do with our lives.
Maybe you want to travel. Perhaps you want to sing in a rock band. Or what about wanting to dance, write, paint, be an actress, teach yoga, live in Italy, run your own bookstore, or like me - run off to the countryside and grow your own food and vegetables? Our SECRET dreams are often creative or soulful - things society tells us are not worthwhile, ‘sensible’ or practical for making a living. But SECRET dreams can be anything that goes against our upbringing. For example I once had a client who was brought up in a ‘giving’ charitable household that disdained money, but she secretly wanted to earn stacks of money and be a hotshot business executive…
Your SECRET dreams are the dreams you haven’t dared to turn into goals – because they don’t fit how we think our lives SHOULD be lived…
So, how about a few questions to help you get started? TIP: If you can’t think of an answer, just let it be for a moment or think back to your childhood – how would you answer that question if you were a child again?

  1. Start by making a list of everything you want to BE, DO and HAVE in life – we call this your Wacky, Wild List. Include EVERYTHING you can think of from ‘boring’ and ‘normal’ to wacky and wild.
  2. “What do you want MORE of in your life? What EXCITES and INSPIRES you?” These are things that you get so absorbed in that you forget all about time and the world outside. Remember, we tend to enjoy what we’re good at or have a talent for.
  3. Ask yourself, “What would I try now if I KNEW I could not fail?” Make a list of at least 10 things. To help you ask, “What do I think and dream about that I dismiss as impossible, a waste of time or something for the future?”
  4. List the top 10 things in life that give you joy – what makes your heart sing? When you’ve finished, what do you notice? Do any of these items appear on any of your other answers?
  5. What would you do or try if you had all the; money/time/confidence/support and encouragement/energy you needed?”

This should get you started toward finding your deepest and most meaningful desires. Review your answers and look for repeated answers, common themes and patterns.

And while some of these dreams could be life or career-changing, they don’t have to be!

You simply need to decide whether you work towards a BIG goal or simply bring more of the activities you love into your life by taking a course, starting a hobby or even volunteer because even if you do it for ‘fun’, who knows where it may lead?

So, go on REBEL! Discover those SECRET dreams and bring out the real, authentic you!

DNA Member Spotlight: Rishel Tomlinson, Custom Mortgages

Every few months, DNA puts the spotlight on one of our fabulous members.

This time, please meet the fabulous Rishel Tomlinson!

About Rishel

Rishel has been a member of DNA for three years and she is presently in the position of VP Membership.  Rishel originally joined DNA for the opportunity to meet other women who also wish to build a career, while developing personally and enjoying life!  Rishel has certainly made plenty of friends through DNA!  Rishel’s favourite DNA event is the Golf Tournament, where she enjoys the fantastic networking and the sunshine!

In her free time, Rishel enjoys training for athletic events, including a Triathlon in August and a full marathon in Hawaii this December. Go Rishel Go!

Rishel’s Favourite….

  • …colour is burgundy
  • …local restaurant is The Pear Tree
  • …number is seven
  • …movie star is Clint Eastwood
  • …charity is Habitat for Humanity and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

When asked to sum herself up in three words, Rishel described herself as a GOOD LISTENER, GENUINE and HONEST.

Rishel’s Business Background

Rishel is the owner of an independent mortgage broker firm called Custom Mortgages, where she has helped clients realize their property ownership dreams throughout Greater Vancouver for the past seven years.  Rishel holds the national Accredited Mortgage Professional (AMP) designation and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of British Columbia.

Rishel’s strong value for balance in life carries through to her work, helping clients make sure their choice to enrich their life with the purchase of a home is not going to be at the expense of becoming poor in lifestyle.

When asked why someone from DNA would want to do business with her, she explained how offering one relationship for the life of a mortgage, regardless of the lender, proves invaluable to busy professionals who are able to simply call or email her for mortgage advice over the years….and best of all, she does not have to charge her clients a cent!…Custom Mortgages is a free ‘one-stop’ shop for getting a mortgage, including custom Belgian chocolate extras!!!

Rishel’s Mortgage Wellness Tips:

  1. Increase your regular mortgage instalment payment when possible, especially if you have the dream to upgrade in the near future!  -  “Better to get used to paying a higher payment now while rates are at an all-time low!”
  1. Consult an independent mortgage broker for a PLAN to reach your home ownership goals! – “Just like retirement, it often takes over one million dollars to own a home in Greater Vancouver and you need a PLAN to climb the property ladder!”

  1. Review your personal credit report annually (at equifax.ca) and try to keep your credit card and line of credit use within 50% of their approved limits! – “A credit score above 680 is best!”

A quote from Rishel: “Life isn’t about finding yourself.  Life is about creating yourself!!!”

DNA Spa Night – Relaxation & Networking together

There is something about networking with people while at the spa. You’re in a fluffy terry robe and slippers and sipping on wine in a quiet lounge – how can that NOT be approachable conversation?

Ten lovely DNA ladies indulged at our spa night at Willow Stream Spa yesterday evening, which featured a 30-minute treatment, skin analysis, and a private lounge filled with snacks and drinks for ladies to sit and chat before/after their treatments. The Spa also provided access to their steam room and experience shower (with a crazy number of jets!).

After lots of networking, socializing, and laughing, everyone left relaxed and pampered.

Willow Stream Spa also announced a DNA member-only discount for the spa, so I’m happy to report I can return at a discounted rate.

Between Willow Stream and DNA Member Nancy Mudford’s amazing Le Petit Spa (also offering DNA discounts!), our pampering options are covered.

Now, we can’t wait for 2011′s spa event!
